In addition to collective protection measures (demarcation of the intervention area with road signs) personal protective equipment is at least as important to diminish the risks.
In collaboration with several institutions we have developed specific high visibility clothing that is in accordance with the EN 471 standard class 3. This class has the highest performance level and offers the best visibility.
Every Belgian fireman has to wear high visibility clothing of class 3 on the public road (ministerial circular). This can be resolved by wearing a vest on top of the intervention clothes. These vests are also in accordance with the EN ISO 14116 standard (limited flame spread), index 1.
Furthermore the garments have to indicate that the person is a member of the fire brigade. This is resolved by using fluorescent letters. To be in accordance with the regulation, the wearing of a vest of class 3 in combination with the fire intervention clothes is necessary.
